Hydrologic Modeling with HEC-HMS

The course covers basic hydrologic modeling techniques for precipitation-runoff analysis using the HEC-HMS software.

About This Course

The course provides an introduction to the Hydrologic Modeling System, HEC-HMS, focusing both on using the program and performing watershed studies. The course starts with a summary and overview of the program and the mechanics of constructing watershed models. Then, components of the software are studied in detail. Course topics include:

GIS tools to delineate subbasins and streams, GIS tools to extract physical characteristics and estimate model parameters.

Basin average rainfall estimation, infiltration determination, unit hydrographs, streamflow routing.

Methods for modeling runoff throughout a watershed composed of multiple subbasins and river reaches. Steps to calibrate the HMS model is also included.

Workshops provide hands-on reinforcement for topics covered in the lectures and will demonstrate the application of the HEC-HMS software.

Course Staff

Matthew Fleming

Matt Fleming is the Chief of the Water Management Systems Division, Hydrologic Engineering Center, Davis California. Assist in interface coding and provide technical support and testing of the HEC-HMS program. Team member in numerous hydrologic modeling studies including continuous simulation, hypothetical storm development, reservoir operation, application of climate model data to hydrologic modeling, and dam safety studies.

Thomas Brauer

As lead developer of HEC-HMS, Tom oversees all code activity undertaken by the HEC-HMS team. Tom architects’ new portions of code, manages code submissions from a team of developers, and mentors’ new developers in the code base. Tom oversees the delivery of new releases to the field. Tom has been instrumental in implementing continuous integration/continuous delivery practices at HEC, reducing the delivery time for bug fixes and new features to customers. Tom established a culture of continuous feedback with end-users through frequent releases, a continuous beta testing program for new features, and frequent webinars with the field to highlight new capability. During his time at HEC, Tom has participated in major studies as a hydrologic modeler, implemented major enhancements to the software, provided technical support to users, and developed and delivered training to USACE and customers around the world.
